  • Window safety checklist-----Make our world safer
Window Safety Checklist Preventing window falls Preventing falls out of windows is just as important as learning how to use one in an emergency. Unattended children run the greatest risk of falls and injuries, so the best first step is to carefully watch your children as they play. Nothing can substitute for careful supervision. Do you keep windows shut when children are around?  1.Keep your windows close and locked when children are around. When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that a child cannot reach.  2.Do not rely on insect screens to prevent a fall. Insect screens are designed to provide ventilation while keeping insects out, not to prevent a child`s fall from a window. 3.Set and enforce rules about keeping children`s play away from windows or patio doors. Falling through the glass can be fatal or cause serious injury. Is there furniture placed under or near windows in your home? Keep furniture, or anything children can climb, away from windows. Children may use such objects as a climbing aid. Do any windows in your home have guards, security bars, grilles or grates? 1.If you have young children in your home and are considering installing window guards or window fall prevention devices, be aware that the windows guards you install must have a release mechanism so that they can be opened for escape in a fire emergency. Remember that time is critical when escaping a fire. 2.Consult your local fire department or building code official to determine proper window guard placement. What kind of surface is outside windows in your home to potentially cushion a fall? The degree of injury sustained from a window fall can be affected by the surface on which the victim falls. Shrubs and soft edging like wood chips or grass beneath windows may less then impact if a fall does occur. Emergency fire escape plans While some falls occur from windows, it is important to realize that in the event of a fire, a window also can save a child's life. This is why windows play a critical role in home safety. Has your family developed an emergency fire escape plan? 1. Windows provide a secondary means of escape from a burning home. Determine your family`s emergency escape plan and practice it regularly. In the plan, include two elements of escape from every room. 2.Remember that children may have to rely on a window to escape in a fire. Help them learn to safely use a window under these circumstances. Inspect your home`s windows carefully. Is there anything preventing them from being opened in the case of an emergency? 1.When performing spring repairs, make sure that your windows are not painted or nailed shut. 2.Do not install window unit air conditioners in windows that may be needed for escape or rescue in an emergency. The air conditioning unit could block or impede escape through the window. Always be sure that you have at least one window in each sleeping and living area that meets escape and rescue requirements. • How to: baby-proofing doorknobs to keep them shut
The way to baby-proof doors is to simply make it so that they can`t be opened by the inquisitive toddler. If your doors already have locks, the easiest way to baby-proof them is to simply lock them every time you close them. One option is to change out all door knobs that don`t lock with those that do have a locking mechanism, but that can be costly and really not a great option unless you didn`t really like your existing doorknobs to begin with. Baby-proofing products for doorknobs exist in a variety of formats. When choosing one for your home, the first real question in is whether or not your child is observant and capable of circumventing the lock. Believe me, you`d be amazed at how intelligent a crafty toddler can be. Don`t just assume that because you put a baby-proofing lock on the door that they`re not going to get through it! The second question is whether the lock is convenient to disable for you. Some of them can be a royal pain in the you-know-what if you have to disable them constantly to get through. My recommendations: doorknob baby-proofing products There are tons of different products for baby-proofing your door knobs, and there`s really no one [best" solution for all homes.

  • 'Wrong baby' security fears at Royal London Hospital
According to the BBC News: A maternity unit has been ordered to improve security due to fears parents could "leave with the wrong baby". The Royal London Hospital has been told by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that "lax" checking of name bands left babies and families at risk. A total of 4,645 babies were born at the Whitechapel hospital last year. Inspectors, who visited the hospital in July, also found there were not enough midwives on the delivery suite to provide safe cover for all women. Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, has been told to "urgently" improve security in maternity after rating the service "inadequate". The CQC report said some babies born at the hospital had no name tags - creating a "risk that a baby might receive medication intended for another baby, and mother might leave the unit with the wrong baby". Professor Sir Mike Richards, chief inspector of hospitals, said a number of issues had been raised with the trust, "as a matter for their urgent attention". Issues included: Doctors and midwives on the postnatal ward referring to patients by bed numbers rather than by name "Intra-cultural issues and some bullying behaviour" between midwives and patients Midwives saying they had been ordered by managers not to raise concerns about low staff numbers. A "mixed" view about how caring staff were at the hospital - one mother told inspectors she was treated as "childish" because she was upset her baby had been taken into special care. Sir Mike added: "We were most concerned about the standard of care around maternity and gynaecology services. "Staffing on maternity wards was sometimes inadequately covered - but most worrying of all was the lack of a safe and secure environment for new born babies." Barts Health NHS Trust said it had already taken steps to address baby safety concerns, including the introduction of new baby ID tags. A spokeswoman said: "We acted immediately to improve the security of babies at The Royal London Hospital. "It's important to stress that these reports are based on observations from five months ago - since then we have subjected our processes and procedures to forensic scrutiny. Other key findings during the inspection were nine "never events" - wholly preventable errors that occur in medical care - between August 2015 and July 2016. These errors included a surgeon leaving an object inside a patient after finishing an operation, a wrong tooth extraction and incorrect medication being given to a patient.
